Narrative
The video itself is a compilation of shots from the artist’s previous shows and appearances. The shots and videos progressively get older and older, showing the progression of time as the video progresses. It shows the artist’s rise in popularity in reverse; first showing his success, and lastly showing how he got there in the first place - his origin as a YouTuber. A narrative is then formed in the video; a narrative of success and fame, rags to riches if you will. The caption, “12 years in the making” reinforces this as well - the simple fact that this artist started out from nothing, but kept up his dream and slowly but surely built up his popularity over the span of 12 years, eventually getting to where he is now. Applying equilibrium theory in reverse, new equilibrium is established at the start, disequilibrium is established during his rise and initial equilibrium is established during the start of his journey. It’s a story of success, and a story of perseverance. It showcases how you can achieve your dreams too with enough hard work and patience.
Camerawork
The video itself is a showcase of an artist's music video. The shots undergo rapid transition, predominantly comprising medium close-ups and long shots. Typically, the focus is on the actor's waist, with minimal emphasis on other body parts or anything else; the videos typically focus on the actors and their singing/dancing. The camerawork of a music video is replicated in this work; in such videos, the singer's face, chest or waist is typically the only visible portion of the body, and this is also the case in this piece. The content is presented in the form of a brief video clip on the social media platform TikTok, as opposed to a conventional, extended video format on a website such as YouTube. In general, the clip here is representative of traditional camerawork seen in music videos - most likely because the video itself is most likely a snippet from a music video that’s real and in production.
Mise-en-scene
The same clip is used for the camerawork video, since the video used for that is a music video in of itself. On this occasion, however, the focus will be on the mise-en-scene of the music video. The actors themselves are principally depicted attired in hooded sweatshirts and other such casual garments. The lighting is of a high intensity and clarity; the music video itself is similarly illuminated and possesses a vivid colouration, which corresponds with the exuberant character of the song that is being performed in the background. The quality of the performances and the application of the actors' make-up is mediocre and minimal, and the actors appear as if they are not professional performers. The video's use of props is also indicative of a typical urban setting, and the setting is described as being familiar and recognisable. The video utilizes mise-en-scene to its advantage, creating a typical and natural location for filming and helping the video itself feel quite recognizable to audiences - which helps with immersion.
Editing
The artist in question is promoting their tour on TikTok. The video is characterised by its rapid tempo and the utilisation of an edited version of the artist’s song. The lyrics have been modified to relate with and talk about the tour that the musician is currently going on. Furthermore, the camera transitions between shots with considerable frequency, contributing to a perception of rapid progression throughout the video. The video evokes the aesthetic of a music video, due to the presence of the music in the background and the nature of the edits displayed. The camera showcases a rapid rate of rotation and cuts, resulting in the creation of seamless transitions between successive shots. In general, the editing of this video is seamless, fast paced and guaranteed to get the viewer excited about the tour. The edits are very seamless, and makes the video itself more memorable and loopable to the audience.
Music video conventions
The video was recorded during a live performance by the band. The editing style of the film is comparable to that of a music video, as it is fast-paced, close to the actors, and characterised by a high level of energy. The conventional elements of the music video are demonstrated in this text. These include the costumes worn by the actors and singers, the high-energy scenery, the music, and the fast-paced editing. It is evident that all the necessary elements are present and accounted for, with the exception of the adaptation for use with live-action concert clips in tandem with professionally recorded music videos. The band chose to showcase their song in this way to drive up hype, promotion and to make fans excited. Using clips from their live shows instead of making a “real” music video makes the performance more genuine to the audience and in general makes it all seem more authentic.
Product placement
This is a comedy sketch by an artist. The sketch starts off normally, until one of the actors pulls something out of his bag and reveals the sponsor of the video: Taco Bell. Rather than inserting the advertised product oddly into the video, the artist has tried to incorporate it seamlessly into their sketch, making the narrative of the TikTok video revolve around the item in question. This is clearly seen at the start, when the video is clearly themed around the subject/scenario of school lunch; the plot then changes to focus on the product after it has been revealed. Overall, I think this video is a great example of product placement. Rather than boring the viewer with detailed specifics, they have chosen to incorporate the item into their comedy sketch, creating an advertisement that is much more memorable and effective than a regular one. It stands out from the rest.
